“With California’s refusal Thursday, two of the nation’s most populous states are bucking President Obama’s plan to permit Americans to keep current low-benefit individual health insurance policies for another year, if they want them.

The Covered California Board, which oversees the state’s health insurance exchange under the Affordable Care Act, voted unanimously Thursday not to allow renewal for 2014 of health insurance policies cancelled because their coverage does not meet federal standards under the new law.”

“So far, Washington, Minnesota, Arkansas, Mississippi, Indiana, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have decided not to extend coverage on plans, according to a new map released by America’s Health Insurance Plans, the health insurance industry trade group .

Oregon, North Dakota, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida will allow insurers to extend coverage.”
